While our online business must be high-profile to maximize consumer awareness, through experience our staff has found it appropriate to be low profile, primarily due to the nature of the business in which we are engaged. As one might infer, Remove Me Now has been the target of numerous and almost continuous spammer initiated frauds, spoofs, and attempted scams to sully our service's name, and it has been pleasing to observe the email community become more aware of these tactics that spammers employ against services like ours that are dedicated to fighting them.
Our service has been fighting spam since February 2002 and we have observed the more sophisticated spammers become extremely adept at overcoming attempts from all quarters to defeat them. Unfortunately, and as has been reported in numerous media, there is no software approach that will both totally stop spam, and not require considerable work by the email user to achieve whatever level of results they manage to get. Most who use these products and engage in this kind of anti-spam activity tend to abandon using the product over time due to fatigue, or lack of time, or lack of acceptable results. Meanwhile, the spammers have continued to thrive.
We have also observed spammers become virtually immune to being easily located, because they use a variety of "spoofing" tactics that render themselves extremely difficult, time consuming, and expensive for anyone to trace, including internet service providers ("ISP"). In this instance, spoofing means the tactic of sending unsolicited junk mail, but pretending that someone else sent it. Usually this is achieved by either inserting a false return email address in the return path, or inserting a link to someone else's website in the junk mail message, or both. The spammer wants the recipients to believe that whomever the spam names or links to actually sent the message or is party to it. Plainly, no rational person or entity that would actually send spam would naively identify itself as the sender in the messages, thereby inviting widespread prosecution and lawsuits for spamming. Moreover, no legitimate anti-spam entity such as ours would "sell out" and infuriate its own customer base by collaborating with those who are abusing them with spam.
Recipients can confirm who did not send the spam by contacting their own ISP and obtaining assistance to analyze the message's full headers, which contain its origin and routing information. Such a trace followed by a complaint, will place the sender's ISP on notice that someone on their network may be sending spam, so that appropriate measures can be taken. Typically, anyone not involved with sending spam will not be sanctioned, and should be eliminated as a suspect, regardless of any spammer links or email addresses forged into the spam to mislead.
Unfortunately, standard email traces typically only reveal the individual or entity being spoofed by the spammer, which leads to anger and frustration among those being spammed, and certainly among those the recipients may falsely accuse of spamming. Because of the "open architecture" of email and the internet, which makes them so user-friendly, there is no known way to stop spoofing, and it will likely continue, so email users be warned and wary of such spammer tactics.
In response to these developments, in late 2003 we invented an anti-spam process that is user-friendly and actually stops spam, and we are pleased to make our breakthrough patent pending invention available to the email community. It is not another software approach, and is designed to be flexible so that additional spammer tactics to overcome it can be defeated.
